‘Luxury cruise visionary’ Silversea’s Aris Zarpanely has died

Former Silversea Cruises Executive Vice President Aris Zarpanely has died after a long illness, aged 78.

Aris’ death was announced by his son, Petros, on social media, who said: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of Alexander, Aris Zarpanely, a father, grandfather, mentor and friend, passed away today. Aris had suffered with a prolonged medical issues in recent years and peacefully went to sleep, he has moved on to a better place.”

Steve Odell, who worked with Aris at Silversea and who is now Senior Vice President International & Consumer Sales at Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises, told Travel Gossip Aris was an ‘iconic and visionary leader in the luxury cruise industry’.

He said: “I was proud to call Aris my friend, my mentor and my boss over many years.

“In the early 90s he was part of the team that created his beloved ‘Silversea’ – he understood the DNA of luxury and brought his own personal style and panache to inspire all of us around him. RIP Aris – we will continue your legacy.”

Former Silversea Director of Marketing Mark Lewsey, who was with the cruise line between 1995 and 2000, said: “The passing of Aris is an immense loss to the cruise industry. Aris was more than just a leader, he was a true pioneer who played a key role in transforming the luxury cruise market to the ultra-luxury cruise market, across the UK, Europe, and beyond.

“He had an unmatched passion for the industry, a deep understanding of people, and an effortless charm that made him both a mentor and a friend to so many.

“I was so fortunate to work closely with Aris during my time at Silversea, and his guidance, kindness, and generosity left a lasting impact on me both professionally and personally. He had an incredible way of making everyone feel valued, and his warmth and flair were unmistakable. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire those who had the honour of knowing him.”
