Leeds Bradford air traffic controller strikes suspended

Strikes planned by air traffic controllers at Leeds Bradford Airport this weekend have been suspended after a late pay offer from the airport.

Workers were due to walk out from Friday to Sunday (16-18 October), but the union Unite has paused the action to allow members to vote on the new offer.

If the offer is rejected, strikes planned from 23 October to 2 November will still go ahead, falling over the half term holiday.

The union warned that the airport could be forced to shut if the strikes go ahead, as air traffic controllers would be unable to facilitate flights taking off and landing.

Meanwhile, a separate ballot is under way on an offer for hourly paid staff, including security, check-in, passport control and passenger assistance workers.

The ballot closes tomorrow (14 October). If the offer is rejected, these workers will strike from Friday to Sunday (16-18 October) as planned.

Unite Regional Officer Neil Whitaker said: “Following negotiations, we have suspended the air traffic controller strikes taking place this week to allow members to have their say on a new pay offer.”
