Kenya apologises to cruise passengers robbed by gang in Mombasa

A group of passengers from Crystal Symphony were accosted and robbed by more than 50 youths during an excursion to the Kenya port city of Mombasa.

The attack happened at the famed elephant tusks Pembe za Ndovu monument on Moi Avenue on Monday 31 March.

No injuries were reported, but local reports said most of the passengers cancelled their tour of the old town and quickly returned to the ship.

Local media reported that officers from the Kenya Tourist Board and the National Police Service boarded Crystal Symphony following the incident to apologise to the 1,169 passengers and crew onboard.

The ship later departed for Zanzibar.

No more cruise ships are due to call at Mombasa this year. Crystal Symphony will be the next to return for an overnight visit in January 2026.

Travel Gossip has approached Crystal for a comment.
