Japan could face further tremors after a powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit on Monday night, injuring more than 30 people and knocking out power to around 2,700 homes.
Hitting the north east of the county, the earthquake’s epicentre was 50 miles off the coast of Aomori, at a depth of 30 miles.
It prompted Tsunami warnings, which have now been downgraded to advisories, but the Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that another powerful earthquake could occur over the next seven days.
The Foreign Office is advising Brits in Japan to follow the advice of local authorities and read updates on the NHK World website.
