Investigation launched into mass power cut on Spanish island

Spain has called for an investigation after a power outage left a third of the island of La Palma without electricity on Thursday (8 May).

Power was fully restored just several hours after the outage occurred, reports La Radio Canaria.

Electricity company E-distribución has blamed the outage on a ‘fault’ at the Los Guinchos power plant, reports the Metro, but Spain has asked its own investigators and European Union regulators to investigation.

The blackout, which occurred around 10am local time, impacted around 30,000 people in more than 20 towns on the island, which is part of the Canaries, with affected areas including Los Llanos de Aridane, Breña Alta, Santa Cruz de La Palma and Fuencaliente.

However, flights to and from La Palma Airport were not affected by the outage.

La Palma was not affected by last month’s widespread blackout, which left most parts of Spain and Portugal without power on April 28.

The huge power outage at the end of April caused problems to transport networks, with hundreds of flights cancelled to and from both countries.
