Tourists visiting Iceland’s Blue Lagoon had to be evacuated in the early hours of this morning after a nearby volcano erupted.
It is the 12th time the volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula has erupted since 2021.
Residents from the town of Grindavík, as well as those staying at a local campsite, were also evacuated.
The eruption is just south of the capital, Reykjavik, but the city is unaffected and flights to the international airport Keflavik are continuing as normal.
The eruption is not considered to pose a threat to Grindavík or local infrastructure because it is a relatively small eruption, says Iceland’s meteorological office.
The Blue Lagoon remains closed. A statement on its website reads: “The Blue Lagoon is temporarily closed until 12 pm today, July 16.”
