Hospitality workers in the Balearics call off summer strike

Hospitality workers in the Balearics have called off strike action that had been planned for this month.

More than 180,000 Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) members working in restaurants, bars and hotels, including front-of-house staff, bartenders, kitchen staff and housekeepers, had been due to walk out this month in a row over pay and conditions.

The UGT in Spain called for strike action last week, calling an offer of an 11% pay increase insufficient.

Walkouts had been planned to start on 10 July, with the first day including a blockade of Majorca Airport.

Hotel management and trade union bosses have now reached a deal, which will see thousands of hotel staff receive a salary increase of 13.5% over three years, according to the Mallorca Hotel Federation.

Workers will receive a 6% pay rise this year, a 4% rise in 2026 and a further 3.5% in 2027.
