Heatwave warning issued for most of Spain as temperatures rise again

Spain has issued red ‘high risk’ health alerts for parts of the country as temperatures are forecast to reach as high as 40°C  in some areas this week.

Yellow and amber weather warnings are in place for most of Spain, except the Cantabrian region in the north and the Canary Islands.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) expects the latest heatwave to bring temperatures of 40°C in Córdoba, Granada, Seville, Badajoz and Cáceres, and 39°C in Madrid.

AEMET said it is expecting ‘abnormally warm temperatures’ to last at least until Thursday, but its weather warnings could remain in place till Sunday 10 August.

As a result, the Spanish Ministry of Health has issued ‘high risk’ alerts in Zamora in north-west Spain, and Caceres in the west, and orange ‘medium risk’ alerts in Tarragona, also in the west, and Huesca and Coruna in the north-west.
