G Adventures has cancelled some of its tours in Mexico after guests travelling with the operator were caught up in last week’s outbreak of violence and their vehicle set alight.
On 22 February, two days after the tour started, the vehicle the group was travelling in was forced to stop. After the group got out, the vehicle was set alight and used as a roadblock. The group remained on the side of the road for several hours before being transported to a military base, then on to Mexico City.
The guests were on a nine-day ‘Essential Central Mexico’ tour, from Puerto Vallarta to Mexico City.
The unrest was sparked by the killing of drugs baron Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, during a military operation in Jalisco state that day, and spread to several states.
As a result, the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) warned against all but essential travel to Jalisco. The ban was partially lifted on Friday afternoon (27 February).
UK and EMEA Managing Director Brian Young said: “On 22 February, at approximately 9am local time, a vehicle transporting a group of our travellers from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara was stopped by unauthorised individuals on the highway.
“The travellers and staff vacated the vehicle, before the vehicle was set alight and used as a roadblock. Numerous vehicle fires and incidents were reported across the state of Jalisco in the following hours.
“The safety and wellbeing of our travellers and staff is always our top priority and we can confirm that all members of the group are safe and have been relocated to Mexico City.
“We are working closely with our Chief Experience Officer, who remains with the group, and the impacted travellers to assist with next steps including liaising with embassies, gathering reports from local authorities and supporting onward travel plans.
“We have taken the decision to cancel departures in the Jalisco region up to 6 March 2026. At present, our other trips across Mexico will continue to operate as normal and our local team is monitoring the situation very closely should alterations be necessary.”
G Adventures told Travel Gossip no British travellers were on the trip.
