Norovirus-hit Ambassador ship to leave Bordeaux tomorrow ‘to avoid unsettled weather’

Ambassador Cruise Line has confirmed that Ambition has been released by the French health authorities to continue normal operations but is remaining in Bordeaux overnight to avoid forecast unsettled weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay this evening (14 May).

The cruise operator said that ‘in the interests of guest comfort and crew wellbeing, Ambition will remain in Bordeaux overnight before continuing its sailing on a revised itinerary from tomorrow. This will allow the ship to avoid forecast unsettled weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay this evening which would be less than ideal for guests and crew recovering from gastrointestinal illness, while also providing valuable additional time for crew who have worked exceptionally hard in challenging circumstances over recent days.’

The 1,200-capacity ship had been held in Bordeaux, with guests instructed to remain on board, after a number of passengers and crew were affected by a type of norovirus.

Following an inspection by health authorities, the ship has been told normal operations can continue. All scheduled shore excursions are allowed to operate.

The cruise line confirmed that 48 passengers and one crew member had displayed symptoms consistent with GII, a type of norovirus gastrointestinal illness.

The line also said that a 92-year-old male passenger had died on 10 May. He ‘did not report any GII symptoms and the cause of death has yet to be established pending the coroner’s full report’.

Ambition departed Belfast on 8 May and Liverpool on Saturday 9 May on a 14-night ‘Delights of Western France and Spain Explorer’ sailing. The line said its figures showed an increase in cases following the embarkation of guests in Liverpool.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Ambassador said: “Throughout this period, the health, safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew have remained our highest priority. Enhanced sanitation measures, medical monitoring and isolation procedures remain in place across the ship in accordance with EU SHIPSHAN public health protocols. Medical consultations relating to GII continue to be provided free of charge.

“We would like to thank guests and crew for their patience, understanding and cooperation while precautionary measures remain in place.

“We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the medical team for their outstanding care, professionalism, and steadfast support throughout this time. Their prompt response and ongoing dedication have been truly invaluable. Ambassador continues to work closely with the relevant authorities and will provide further updates as appropriate.”
