Foreign Office warns of ‘unprecedented flooding risk’ in Oman

The Foreign Office (FCDO) has warned travellers to Oman about the risk of ‘extensive and unprecedented flooding’ in the country.

The latest update from the FCDO urges visitors to Oman to ‘exercise extra vigilance and follow the advice of the Royal Oman Police and the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority of Oman’ with ‘some roads closed, and others with restrictions in place due to debris or damaged bridges.’

Gulf News has reported that Oman is preparing for thunderstorms and possible flash floods from today (31 March) until April 2 after the ‘national meteorological authorities warned of unstable weather conditions affecting several governorates.’

According to The Guardian, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have also been affected by ‘an unusual weather pattern’ that ‘unleashed severe thunderstorms’ with the Arabian peninsula receiving ‘up to 150mm of rain in just a few days.’

This latest advice from the FCDO follows on from guidance to British nationals in Oman to exercise increased caution due to the Middle East conflict, which has led to ‘limited drone and missile activity in the commercial ports and industrial areas of Duqm, Salalah and Sohar.’
