Foreign Office warns of threat to high-end hotels in Pakistan’s Karachi

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has issued new advice to travellers in Pakistan after the US was told of a threat to high-end hotels in Karachi.

In an update to its travel advice, the FCDO said the warning was sent to the US Consulate General last Friday.

It said: “In response to such threats, the US Embassy and Consulates sometimes place areas such as tourist attractions, hotels, markets, shopping malls and restaurants off-limits to official U.S. government personnel.

“The U.S. Consulate General in Karachi has temporarily limited visits by official U.S. government personnel to these hotels.”

The FCDO was already advising against all travel to parts of Pakistan, including within 10 miles of the border with Afghanistan and areas within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, the Balochistan Province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

It advises against all but essential travel within five miles of the international with India and areas of the Sindh Province.

It states that ‘there is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.’

The latest news follows reports that both Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Airblue are preparing to resume flights to Manchester after the UK lifted a five-year ban on Pakistani carriers.
