The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Belgium as police in Brussels launched a hunt for two men who opened fire near an underground station on Wednesday.
It warned that terrorists are ‘likely’ to carry out attacks in Belgium, saying these could be ‘indiscriminate’ and in areas frequented by tourists.
“You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local authorities,” it said.
Early on Wednesday morning, at least two men wearing balaclavas and carrying what appeared to be Kalashnikov weapons fired off a round of bullets at the entrance to the Clémenceau station in Brussels.
No-one was injured and police are still searching for the suspects, who fled into the station.
The incident follows a terrorism-related shooting in Brussels on 16 October 2023, in which two people were killed and one seriously injured, and the killing of a police officer in the capital in 2022.
The Foreign Office added: “The Belgian authorities have successfully disrupted various attack plans, making a number of arrests in recent years.
“The Belgian government has set the national threat level at 3 ‘Serious’. You can expect to see an increased police presence, and additional safety measures may be in place. Be aware of your surroundings and follow the advice of local authorities.”
