Foreign Office warns of new alcohol rules in Portuguese resort

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its advice for Portugal, with information on new restrictions on the sale of alcohol in some areas of Albufeira.

The FCDO’s updated advice says: “The Town Council has placed restrictions on the sale of alcohol from shops and supermarkets in certain parts of Albufeira between 11pm and 8am. For more information on the measures, including the areas affected, see Albufeira Town Hall’s website.

The rules have been brought in to ‘combat public disorder’ and cover shops and supermarkets in the Avenida Sá Carneiro and Baixa de Albufeira areas. The restrictions will remain in place until 31 October.

The Municipality of Albufeira said: “The objective is to avoid situations of public disorder, motivated by the excessive consumption of alcohol. During the period in question, the sale of these products will only be permitted for consumption within the interior of establishments.”

The new rule is in addition to a Code of Conduct that Albufeira brought in earlier this year, banning ‘inappropriate behaviour’ in public places.

Anyone who breaks the rules could get an on-the-spot fine of between €150 and €1,800.
