Foreign Office updates advice for Turkey following Istanbul earthquakes

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Turkey after a series of earthquakes struck near Istanbul today (Wednesday 23 April).

The earthquakes, including a 6.2-magnitude tremor, struck in the Sea of Marmara near the Turkish city, shaking buildings.

More than 150 people have reportedly been hospitalised after sustaining injuries while they attempted to flee.

The FCDO said: “Many parts of Turkey regularly experience earthquakes and tremors. These can be of a high magnitude, cause damage to infrastructure, and pose a risk to life.”

Airports in Istanbul are operating as normal.

In 2023, southern Turkey was devastated by two giant earthquakes, which claimed more than 55,000 lives.
