Foreign Office updates advice for Rome following death of Pope

Travellers to Rome and the Vatican City are being warned about ‘large crowds’ following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April.

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) updated its travel advice on Monday, to say: “Following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April, large crowds are expected in Rome and the Vatican City over the coming days. Please follow the advice of local authorities.”

Pope Francis died of a stroke at his apartment at Casa Santa Marta on Monday.

His funeral will take place on Saturday (27 April), with dignitaries and heads of state from around the world expected to attend.

The updated guidance comes as Rome celebrates its Holy (or Jubilee) Year, with the city expected to be ‘very busy’ until 6 January 2026 when it ends.

The Jubilee happens every 25 years, during which Catholics are encouraged to visit Rome’s Christian catacombs and its seven pilgrim churches.

Visitors to Rome in the coming months have been urged to check the official Jubilee website or download the Jubilee app for a calendar of events.
