Foreign Office issues warning as cyclone hits Sri Lanka

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its advice for Sri Lanka after heavy rains caused floods and landslides.

At least 56 people have been killed and 21 are missing in what the BBC described as ‘one of the worst weather-related disasters the country has seen in recent years’.

The storm has now developed into a cyclone, which is moving across the eastern coast and heading to the north of the country.

The FCDO said: “Sri Lanka is currently experiencing severe weather. Heavy rain has caused flooding and landslides, which are causing travel disruption across the country.

“Some flights have been diverted, check with your airline or tour operator if you are due to fly.”

There is a 24-hour hotline in Sri Lanka, on 1912.
