Foreign Office issues travel warning over five-day rail strike in Belgium

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its advice for Belgium ahead of a five-day train strike, which could affect both national and international services.

Several trade unions are planning strikes from 10pm on Sunday 25 January until the end of services on Friday 30 January and rail services are expected to be disrupted throughout the week.

The FCDO is advising travellers to consult the railway operator SNCB’s journey planner before travelling, to monitor local news and check with their provider for delays and cancellations.

The update said: “Strike action is an ongoing issue that can cause travel disruption. General strikes took place on 31 March, 29 April, 14 October, 26 November and 15 December 2025. Strike action may be announced at short notice.”

The Brussels Times said it is currently unclear which routes will be affected by the union action, and that railway staff have until Thursday (22 January) to indicate if they are striking.

It warned that international travel might also be affected, adding that Eurostar expects to provide more information by Friday (23 January).

Travel Gossip has contacted Eurostar for comment.
