The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its advice for Malta and Gozo, warning gale-force winds are likely to disrupt transport and telling travellers to follow local safety guidance.
The country’s Meteorological Office issued a red weather warning yesterday (19 January), ahead of strengthening winds that reached gale force by the afternoon. The warning is in place until later today, although further warnings for strong winds are likely in the following days, local media reports.
Residents have been advised to say indoors and keep away from shorelines, breakwaters and coastal paths, due to strong waves and sea spray.
The FCDO’s update says: “Severe weather, including strong winds, are expected across Malta and Gozo on Monday 19 January and Tuesday 20 January.
“Public transport will be disrupted; the Gozo ferry is suspended. Malta International Airport is expected to remain open but this could change at short notice.
“The Government of Malta has advised people to stay indoors where possible and avoid coastal areas. Monitor local media for further updates.
“The British High Commission to Malta will be closed to the public on Tuesday 20 January. For urgent consular assistance affecting British Nationals please call: +356 2323 0000.”
