The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has issued advice for Trinidad and Tobago after a state of emergency was declared following a weekend of violence.
A spate of killings on 30 December took the islands’ murder total to 623 in 2024, of which nearly half were gang-related and almost all linked to organised crime, police said.
The FCDO said: “On December 30 2024, the Trinidad and Tobago authorities declared a nationwide state of emergency in response to gang-related violence. No curfew has been imposed and there are no restrictions on public gatherings or marches.”
It added that, during the state of emergency, security forces do not need a warrant to search people and property or to arrest and detain people.
The advice continues: “Expect heightened police and military presence. Always carry your ID and comply with local authorities.”.
