Authorities warned of ‘extreme danger’ in Barcelona yesterday, after torrential rain closed a number of main roads and flooded El Prat Airport.
Dozens of flights were cancelled, diverted or delayed on Monday afternoon, including numerous services from London, Manchester and Liverpool.
The airport terminal was flooded and the runway submerged as the authorities issued a red weather alert for Barcelona, warning of ‘continuous and torrential rain’.
Flooding in the neighbouring Valencia region has already killed 217 people, and some 2,000 more are missing.
People in Barcelona were warned yesterday to avoid travel and to keep away from streams and ravines.
The rest of the Catalonia region is under amber and yellow warnings.
All commuter trains have been cancelled in northeast Catalonia.
Several fund-raising initiatives have been launched to assist victims of the floods in Valencia, including one by Intrepid and another by TUI Care Foundation.
