Flights grounded and trains disrupted as Belgium and Italy are hit by strikes

Brussels airports have cancelled flights on Wednesday (26 November) due to a planned national day of action, which comes at the end of three days of strikes Belgium.

Some train services, including Eurostar connections, have also been cancelled, and travellers are being warned of potential road blocks and significant disruption to all forms of public transport.

Brussels Airport has grounded all departing flights on Wednesday and it is warning that some arrivals might also be cancelled.

Brussels South-Charleroi Airport has cancelled all departing and arriving flights. In a statement, it said: “Due to the national day of action planned for Wednesday 26 November by a united front of trade unions and the lack of staff available to ensure safe operations, Charleroi Airport will not be able to operate scheduled departures and arrivals.

“Passengers scheduled to fly via Charleroi on November 26 will be contacted in the coming days by their airline for a rebooking or refund.

“From 24 to 26 November, during the three days of strikes, travel to the airport may be difficult. Roadblocks and significant disruptions to public transport are to be expected. Please take precautions to avoid delays.

“We regret the impact of this national strike on our passengers’ travel plans and apologise for any inconvenience caused. 

In Italy, a 24-hour strike by members of the USB union is due to take place on Friday (28 November), which is likely to lead to flight and train cancellations.

The strike in Italy will start at 9pm on Thursday and could also impact travel by road as toll-booth workers and roadside assistance employees are being asked to join the industrial action.
