A nationwide strike in Belgium on Thursday has led to flight cancellations at airports in Brussels and warnings of disruption on public transport.
Belgium’s three main trade unions have called the strike and expect 60,000 members to join a protest in Brussels from 10.30am.
Police have warned of major traffic disruption throughout the day in Brussels. Disruption is also expected on services run by STIB, which operates metro, tram and bus services, and bus and tram company De Lijn. National rail operator SNCB is expected to run, although services will be busier than normal.
Flights departing Brussels Airport in Zaventem and Brussels-South Airport in Charleroi have been cancelled. Flights arriving into Zaventem are likely to be disrupted, while only Schengen flights will operate into Charleroi. Air traffic controllers are striking at smaller airports, although no cancellations have yet been announced at Antwerp, Ostend-Bruges and Liege airports.
Brussels Airport said: “To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, we have decided, in consultation with the airlines, not to operate any departing passenger flights on 13 February.
“Airlines will contact passengers whose flights have been impacted. We ask passengers not to come to the airport on the day.”
Passengers on arriving flights have been told to check their flight status with their airline or via the Brussels Airport website or app.
