FCDO issues warning ahead of Bulgaria adopting the euro

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its advice for Bulgaria, ahead of the country’s switch to using the euro.

The FCDO said: “As of 1 January 2026, the currency of Bulgaria will be the euro. Bulgarian lev will still be accepted until 31 January, but can be exchanged for euros free of charge at Bulgarian banks until 30 June 2026.”

It warned: “There may be some temporary disruption to card payments and to cash withdrawals from ATMs around 31 December 2025 to 1 January 2026 due to the changeover in currency.

“Cash payments will be unaffected.”
