FCDO issues unusual warning to travellers to Thailand

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Thailand, warning Brits that they could end up in prison for taking too many packs of cards into the country or flying unregistered drones.

Thailand has strict laws on gambling, including a limit on how many playing cards holidaymakers can carry.

The FCDO warns: “Under the Playing Cards Act (1943) it is illegal to carry over one hundred and twenty playing cards. Violation of the Act could lead to prosecution, a fine, or even imprisonment.”

It is also illegal to fly a drone if it is not registered. Visitors need to register their drone with Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) within 30 days of entering the country, said the FCDO.

Drones purchased in Thailand must also be registered, even if there is no intent to fly them.

The FCDO added: “The regulations apply to all drones, including those for recreational use. The fine for an unregistered drone with the NBTC is 100,000 baht [£2,255] or five years imprisonment or both.”
