Toronto Pearson Airport was thrown into chaos on Thursday when police fatally shot a man outside the departures area of Terminal 1.
Videos posted online show dozens of police cars outside the terminal, which is understood to have been placed in lockdown.
Authorities said that the shooting happened after they were called to a ‘dispute’ involving ‘two or three’ people. After several minutes of ‘de-escalation attempts’, one of the individuals involved in the dispute pulled out a gun and police opened fire.
Ontario Provincial Police said Highway 409 to Terminal 1 (departures) was temporarily closed while the incident was investigated. Passengers and vehicles were rerouted to enter and exit through Terminal 1 arrivals, but the airport confirmed today that the situation had returned to normal.
Toronto Pearson is Canada’s busiest airport. Flights continued to operate normally throughout the incident.
