Extreme heat warning issued for Canaries and other parts of Spain

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued yellow and amber weather warnings for extreme heat for parts of the Spanish mainland, Mallorca and the Canary Islands.

For today (Tuesday 15 July), a yellow weather warning is in place in Gran Canaria (pictured) and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, with AEMET expecting temperatures to reach 35C. A yellow warning is also in place for an area in the south-west of Mallorca, where temperatures are expected to reach 36C.

Temperatures in the Canaries are expected to climb to 37C tomorrow (Wednesday 16 July), when an amber warning will be in place for Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, and a yellow warning will cover the rest of the archipelago.

AEMET warned temperatures could reach 37C in regions such as the Tejeda basin and south- and west-facing midlands in Gran Canaria, as well as inland areas of the southern half of Fuerteventura.

AEMET expects temperatures to reach 40C in parts of mainland Spain today, including Seville, Cordoba, Granada and Cadiz.

Spanish authorities have told holidaymakers and residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day and look after people who may be vulnerable.
