EasyJet confirms ambition to fly from Heathrow as airport submits expansion plan

EasyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis said Heathrow’s proposed third runway and expansion of its terminal buildings could pave the way for low-cost flights from the UK’s biggest airport.

His comments were included in a statement from Heathrow, confirming it has submitted its proposal for a new, £21 billion runway, which could be open within a decade.

The runway, which will be privately financed, along with a new T5X terminal and planned expansion of Terminal 2, will allow the airport to handle up to 150 million passengers and 756,000 flights a year.

It will create at least 30 new daily routes, more domestic connections, and an improved selection of flight times to popular destinations, according to Heathrow.

The Heathrow press statement included a comment from Kenton Jarvis, who said: “Expansion at Heathrow will provide consumer and economic benefits and represents a unique opportunity for easyJet to operate from the airport at scale for the first time and bring with it lower fares for consumers.”

However, the airport’s expansion plans face considerable opposition, including from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who argues that it will create more noise and air pollution and adversely impact the UK’s climate change targets.
