Plans to borrow £57 million towards reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport have been given the go-ahead, ending weeks of uncertainty.
Last month, there were fears reopening plans could be scuppered, after Reform, which is the majority party on City of Doncaster Council, threatened to pull its support for the £57m loan.
But at a meeting on Monday (11 May), Reform councillors amended their motion to cancel the loan, although they have set safeguards in place, including over the lease agreement with landowner Peel.
Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said: “Common sense has prevailed. Doncaster Reform have u-turned and confirmed that they back the borrowing facility, meaning the project can continue to fully reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
“Reform have caused over two months of uncertainty but works can now recommence.”
Energy Secretary and MP for Doncaster North Ed Miliband said: “I’m relieved to see that Doncaster’s Reform UK councillors will now support the re-opening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.”
