The Foreign Office is warning visitors to the coastal areas of the southernmost area of Chile to exercise caution following a major earthquake in Drakes Passage.
Drakes Passage is the body of water between Cape Horn on the southernmost tip of South America and Antarctica.
The earthquake’s epicentre was about 135 miles from the Argentine city of Ushuaia – the world’s most southerly city.
A tsunami alert was issued by the Chilean Government following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake shortly before 10am in the Magallanes region.
The Foreign Office said evacuation orders have since been lifted, but added: “Those in the affected areas have been asked to exercise caution in coastal areas.
“If you are in the region, you should follow the guidance of local authorities and monitor local media for updates.”
