Disruption on Brussels metro as police hunt gunmen

Parts of the Brussels underground network have been shut down while police search for armed men following a shooting outside a metro station in the city centre.

CCTV footage shows at least two men wearing balaclavas and carrying what appeared to be Kalashnikov weapons at the entrance of Clémenceau station early on Wednesday.

Video from the scene shows an exchange of fire at about 6.15am local time, the BBC reports.

A police spokesperson said the suspects fled into the metro station and may still be underground. The spokesperson added there are no victims from the shooting.

POLITICO reports the metro is shut between European Quarter and Anderlecht.

The police spokesman told POLITICO: “For security reasons we had to shut down the metro line.”
