Delta to introduce ‘basic’ business and first class fares

US airline Delta will extend its ‘basic’ fares to both business and first class passengers in 2026.

The carrier announced it will unbundle its premium cabin fares for the US market this year, but it has yet to confirm if and when this will be rolled out internationally.

The move follows the introduction of a basic fare in its premium economy Comfort Plus cabin last November, which gives passengers the same onboard service but cuts out extras such as free seat selection and check-in baggage. The basic fares also have stricter change and cancellation policies and passengers earn fewer loyalty points.

The Independent reported that during an earnings call last week, Delta president Glen Hauenstein said the extension of the basic fares to business and first class would be one of the airline’s initiatives for 2026.

He said: “We’ve talked about having three categories for every product, which is basic, main and extra. And that continues to evolve.

“We put those products in place for Comfort Plus, and that implementation is producing results that are actually slightly above our internal projections.

“So, you’ll see us continue to bring that and move that up the ladder to give customers choice not only of the seat, but the actual product that they want to buy with that seat and disaggregating that out.”

Delta has also announced it will add 30 new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to its fleet, with delivery expected to be complete by 2031. The aircraft will feature more premium seats and will be used on transatlantic routes.
