Thousands of cruise passengers have been delayed leaving New York by a storm that has halted departures over the past few days.
A ‘Nor’easter’, which is a storm that causes winds along the US east coast typically from the north east, has forced lines including Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and NCL to delay leaving ports around New York and New Jersey.
Cruise Hive reports ships have remained docked until at least today (14 October).
According to ship tracking site CruiseMapper, Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas has left Bayonne’s Cape Liberty Cruise Port this morning. It had been due to sail on Sunday (12 October) on a seven-night Bahamas cruise.
MSC Meraviglia has left Brooklyn’s cruise port this morning, after its Sunday departure for a week-long Bahamas cruise was delayed.
A spokesperson from MSC confirmed that guests are being provided with compensation in the form of onboard and future cruise credits.
NCL’s Norwegian Getaway is still docked at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. It had been due to sail on Sunday on a seven-night New England and Canada cruise. The ship is expected to sail today, dropping Newport and Boston from the itinerary and heading straight to the port of Bar Harbor. Guests who had booked shore excursions in cancelled ports will receive refunds.
Two German ships, TUI’s Mein Schiff 1 and Hapag-Lloyd’s Europa are also at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.
Europa was due to leave yesterday to sail across the Atlantic to arrive in Hamburg on 24 October. Mein Schiff 1 had been in New York for an overnight stay and is scheduled to depart tonight to Miami and the Bahamas.
