Carnival has diverted three ships away from Vanuatu in the Pacific following an earthquake on Monday that killed at least 14 people and injured more than 200.
The 7.3 magnitude quake struck close to the cruise port in the capital Port Vila.
Rescuers are still trying to find survivors trapped in buildings more than 24 hours after the earthquake and a seven-day state of emergency has been declared to limit the public’s movement while rescue operations are under way.
At least 10 buildings in Port Vila were severely damaged and the earthquake also knocked out power and mobile phone services.
A building housing the British High Commission, as well as the US Embassy, was also badly damaged.
Several cruise ships were due to call at Port Vila over the next few days. Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Sea was scheduled to arrive there earlier today and P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Encounter was due to arrive on 21 December followed by Pacific Adventure on 22 December and Carnival Luminosa on 23 December.
However, in a statement, P&O Cruises’ parent Carnival said: “Carnival Corporation & plc is deeply saddened to see the devastation caused by the earthquake in Port Vila and our hearts go out to everyone affected by this disaster.
“Given the extensive damage in Port Vila and the current State of Emergency, a visit to Port Vila is not possible for current itineraries.
“Guests on the current Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter voyages will spend an extra day at sea, while guests on Carnival Luminosa will visit Mystery Island instead of Port Vila.
“Guests on future voyages to Port Vila will be advised on any itinerary changes as soon more is known.
“We thank the guests for their understanding and our thoughts are with the people of Vanuatu.
“We have been in contact with the disaster management effort, both in Vanuatu and Australia, in case our ships can be of assistance.”
Cunard said it is ‘evaluating the situation’ before deciding whether its ship Queen Elizabeth should continue with plans to call at Port Vila on 28 December.
