Cruise demand drives strong start to year for Saga

Over-50s specialist Saga says its cruise business is performing ahead of expectations, with strong demand creating a positive start to the new financial year.

In a trading update ahead of its AGM, Saga reported continued momentum across its travel division, with Ocean Cruise delivering particularly strong results despite wider geopolitical uncertainty affecting parts of the travel market.

Ocean Cruise revenue is expected to increase in the first half of the year, driven by a 13% rise in average revenue per booked passenger per day and a load factor of 93%. Saga said forward bookings remain strong, giving it confidence in performance for the remainder of the year and beyond.

River Cruise is also trading ahead of last year, with average revenue per booked passenger per day up 4% and load factors holding firm at 93%.

The group’s holidays business has remained resilient, with first-half revenue and passenger numbers both expected to be ahead of the same period last year.

However, Saga said ongoing conflict in the Middle East has prompted some customers to favour short-haul destinations, meaning full-year passenger numbers could be slightly lower than previously anticipated, although revenue is still expected to increase year-on-year.

Group Chief Executive Mike Hazell said: “Saga has made a strong start to the year, building on the significant growth we achieved last year.

“Our momentum in Travel has continued, demonstrating the resilience of our customers and our diverse offering, despite the current geopolitical uncertainty. Looking ahead, we are focussed on continuing to grow our Travel businesses.”

The company said it remains on track to deliver its full-year guidance and medium-term growth targets.

The group’s interim results for the six months ending 31 July 2026 will be announced on 30 September 2026
