A Celebrity Cruises ship was unable to dock in Amsterdam for two hours on Wednesday (27 July) because of a demonstration by Extinction Rebellion.
The cruise line’s ship Celebrity Eclipse was delayed reaching its homeport at the end of an 11-night sailing to Iceland and Ireland by the protestors.
They were eventually removed by law enforcement, with five activists arrested.
Celebrity Eclipse later docked safely and is currently sailing to the Norwegian Fjords.
It’s not the first time Extinction Rebellion has delayed a ship from docking in Amsterdam, where there have been multiple protests.
In 2024, Ambassador’s Ambience was blocked from sailing into Amsterdam by climate change protestors. The ship was carrying 170 delegates attending the Advantage Latitude cruise conference amongst the 1,400 passengers onboard.
Instead of docking in the city centre, the ship docked at IJmuidena, a 45-minute drive away, where passengers had to travel by shuttle bus to the city centre.
