Canary Islands baggage handler accused of stealing from tourists’ luggage

A baggage handler has been arrested in the Canaries following an investigation into multiple thefts from suitcases inside an airport.

The alleged haul included €5,000 in cash, which was reported missing from a passenger’s checked in bag on 3 December.

The woman, who was flying from Fuerteventura to London Gatwick, said the money had been in an envelope inside her suitcase.

After she reported the missing cash, the Guardia Civil launched an investigation called Operation Bodega, according to Canarian Weekly.

It identified the suspect after checking CCTV footage from baggage-handling zones at Fuerteventura airport and further investigations led officers to believe this was one of multiple thefts, totalling around €14,000.

The suspect has been placed before the courts, while the investigation remains open.

Police have not ruled out further charges and are urging other passengers who suspect items have been stolen from their luggage at the airport to come forward.

In October last year, police in neighbouring Tenerife arrested a gang of at least 20 people believed to have stolen valuables worth more than £52,000 from passengers’ luggage.
