The Canary Islands Government has placed Tenerife and La Palma on red alert as Storm Nuria brings hurricane-force winds.
Gusts of up to 130kph are expected across the islands, with Tenerife and La Palma taking the brunt of the storm.
Strong winds are also expected in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, El Hierro and La Gomera.
A coastal alert is also in place, warning of waves three- or four-metres high, especially along the northwestern and southeastern coasts and in open waters between the islands.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) said strong west and southwesterly winds will intensify this morning, with average speeds of 40kph to 60kph. Localised areas will experience average speeds of up to 70kph.
The most severe conditions are expected in high-altitude areas of Tenerife and La Palma, such as the summits of La Palma and Teide National Park, and the elevated areas of northwestern and southeastern Tenerife where the south airport is located.
The airports remain open and appear to be operating normally.
The wind is expected to ease this afternoon, say forecasters.
