The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is expecting the biggest Christmas getaway ever from UK airports this year and says passenger numbers for 2025 look set to exceed 300 million for the first time.
A record 90m passengers flew from UK airports between July and September, according to the CAA, with 231m passing through UK airports in the first nine months of the year,
In 2024, 295m passengers flew through UK airports, with 22m flying in December 2024.
Airports with the highest year-on-year growth in passengers this summer were Edinburgh, recording a 9% increase; Liverpool, up 10%; and Bournemouth, up 28%.
The most popular summer destinations were Mallorca, Dublin, Amsterdam and Alicante.
CAA Group Director for Consumers and Markets Selina Chadha said: “We now have more people flying than ever before and are on track for the biggest Christmas getaway in history.”
