Budget airline Wizz Air UK ‘files for permission to launch transatlantic flights’

Wizz Air’s UK arm has applied for permission to operate flights between the UK and the US, according to various media outlets.

Its submission to the US Department of Transportation seeks the right to operate transatlantic flights under the existing ‘open skies’ agreement between the UK and the US

While the budget carrier is initially planning charter flights, it is also considering launching scheduled flights in the future, say reports, but it hasn’t revealed possible destinations.

Wizz Air UK has a fleet of 21 Airbus A321neos, three of which are long-range A321XLRs.

Currently, its longest flight from the UK is from London Gatwick to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, which takes just under seven hours.

Its reported application to fly to the US follows its decision to axe its Abu Dhabi-based Middle Eastern operation last year.

Travel Gossip has approached Wizz Air UK for a comment.
