Two Britons are among 16 passengers still missing after a tourist boat sank off the Egyptian coast in the early hours of Monday morning.

The boat, named Sea Story, sank near the Shaab Satayah coral reef, off the resort of Marsa Alam after it was hit by a freak wave, according to reports.

It was carrying 31 tourists, including four British passengers, and 14 Egyptian crew members, according to local media.

Also on the boat were tourists from Germany, Spain, Belgium, China, Slovakia, Poland, Norway, the US, Finland, Ireland and Egypt.

Twenty-eight people, including two of the British passengers, have been rescued and a search operation is still under way.

Sea Story had left Ghalib in Marsa Alam on Sunday and had been due to arrive at Hurghada Marina on 29 November.

The Foreign Office (FCDO) said: “We are providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families following an incident in Egypt and are in contact with the local authorities.”
