Birmingham closes runway to make way for TUI emergency landing

A TUI Boeing 737 heading to Cyprus was forced to make an emergency landing at Birmingham Airport after a bird strike during its take-off from Cardiff.

Birmingham temporarily closed its runway for around 30 minutes from 5.12pm on Sunday to make way for the TUI diversion.

The plane was met by the fire service on arrival, but the aircraft landed safely and taxied to the apron, said an airport spokesperson.

TOM 6754 had taken off from Cardiff at 4.28pm, heading for Paphos, but following the strike, it circled Swansea Bay before flying on to Birmingham, landing at 5.30pm.

TUI said the passengers were put up in a hotel overnight and flew out to Cyprus this morning.
