Birmingham Airport has been forced to close its runway due to a light aircraft incident.
The incident occurred around 1.40pm and caused minor injuries to one person, according to Birmingham Airport Police.
The airport notified passengers of the closure in a post on X at 2.40pm today (Wednesday 6 August). Its website has now crashed, which means passengers are unable to check arrival and departure details.
The BBC has confirmed the incident involved a Beech B200 Super King Air, a light aircraft. While it is not yet known what caused the incident, photos posted on X show a small white aircraft with three emergency vehicles around it.
A Birmingham Airport spokesperson told Travel Gossip: “Following an aircraft incident, the runway is temporarily closed.
“We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. We will keep passengers already at the airport informed and those due to travel later today, are advised to check the status of their flight before coming to the airport.
“We will continue to issue updates when we can.”
Holidaymakers on X have shared how they have been diverted to other airports, including Stansted and East Midlands, due to the runway closure.
A Jet2 flight from Lanzarote has been diverted to Manchester Airport, while an easyJet has diverted flights from Corfu and Heraklion to Luton, according to FlightRadar.
