BA’s first Starlink flight takes off

British Airways has become the first UK airline to operate a flight using Starlink wi-fi, offering the free, fast technology on a 787-8 aircraft from London Heathrow to Houston today (19 March).

BA announced in November last year it was installing Starlink across its fleet, as part of a £7 billion transformation programme.

The airline is currently in the process of fitting Starlink onto its 787-8 fleet. Within the next two years the entire British Airways fleet of more than 300 aircraft will have Starlink, available for all customers.

BA Chairman and Chief Executive Sean Doyle described the launch as ‘a landmark moment’.

He said: “We’re excited to be the first UK airline to bring this level of connectivity to our customers.

“We know that staying connected matters to people, whether they’re travelling for work or heading off on holiday, and Starlink will give our customers fast, reliable wi-fi that transforms the onboard experience. This milestone is part of a wider investment in elevating every aspect of our customer journey as we continue to modernise our airline.”

Virgin Atlantic, meanwhile, plans to introduce Starlink in-flight connectivity in the third quarter of 2026 and the installation is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
