ATC strike to hit travel to Spain, including the Canaries, from mid-April

Air traffic controllers in Spain are threatening to go on strike from 17 April.

The industrial action by staff at SAERCO-managed towers is expected to hit 14 airports nationwide, including Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera in the Canary Islands.

In mainland Spain, the strike will affect Seville, Jerez, Cuatro Vientos in Madrid, Vigo in Calicia, A Coruña, Castellón-Costa Azahar in Valencia, Burgos, Huesca and Cuidad Real.

Flights are likely to be delayed or cancelled during the industrial action, for which there is no stated end date.

Workers say they are overworked, tired and stressed due to staff shortages.

Talks to resolve the dispute have so far failed, with several planned meetings reportedly postponed or cancelled.
