Foreign Office updates advice for India following deadly blast near Red Fort

An explosion near one of India’s most famous tourist attractions, the Red Fort in Delhi, has killed at least eight people.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said the explosion happened at around 18:52 local time. when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light, then exploded. The explosion happened near a metro station and the busy Chandani Chowk trading area.

Police say security is being stepped up in the city and neighbouring Uttar Predesh, where the Taj Mahal is located.

The Red Fort, or Lal Qila in Hindi, is an historic Mughal fort in Old Delhi. Thousands of tourists visit the monument every day.

The UK Foreign Office has updated its advice for India to say: “There has been an explosion at the Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station, New Delhi. If you’re in the immediate area follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local media.”
