Alaska storm forces cruise ships to cancel ports of call

Stormy weather in Alaska has forced a number of cruise ships to reroute or cancel their port calls this week.

Heavy winds and rain are hitting parts of southcentral and southeastern Alaska.

According to Cruise Hive, three Princess ships – Sapphire Princess, Ruby Princess and Discovery Princess – have cancelled their calls in Juneau today (Wednesday).

Cruisemapper indicates Sapphire Princess is heading to Ketchikan while both Ruby and Discovery Princess are in Skagway.

Another ship, Caribbean Princess, arrived in Juneau on Tuesday and will remain there until the weather passes, meaning it will skip its planned call in Skagway today.

Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam is currently on a seven-night sailing from Whittier in Alaska to Vancouver, and guests have been told that a call in Skagway today (Wednesday) has been cancelled and the ship will now call in Haines instead.

Cruise Hive said Nieuw Amsterdam’s captain wrote to guests onboard, saying: “I wish to inform you of a revision to our itinerary. Due to a forecast for adverse weather with high winds and heavy swells, we have cancelled our call to Skagway, Alaska.”
