Royal Air Maroc will launch a twice-weekly service from London Gatwick to Tetouan on the north-east Moroccan coast in March.
The service is one of six new routes announced by the airline, which is opening a new base at Tetouan-Sania R’mel Airport.
The initiative is being supported by the Moroccan National Tourist Office to drive more visitors to the region, which is just south of Tangier.
Starting on 29 March, the flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays in both directions.
The route will be operated by an Embraer 190 aircraft, according to Morocco World News, which said the airline is also launching flights from Tetouan to Brussels, Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga and Paris at the same time.
Royal Air Maroc CEO Hamid Addou told the publication that it ‘strengthens the attractiveness of northern Morocco to European markets that generate tourists’.
Known as ‘the daughter of Granada’, Tetouan boasts similar Hispano-Moorish architecture, and its medina (old town) is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tetouan airport is the gateway to the seaside resort of Tamouda Bay, which has fifteen kilometres of sandy beach.
