Travel agent Pauline Hill is taking on a golf challenge today (Thursday 18 June) to raise funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK.
The Perthshire-based Rosemount Travel Personal Travel Designer is joining friends Maggie and Elaine from Blairgowrie Golf Club to play 45 holes as part of Prostate Cancer UK’s Big Golf Race.
The trio, who are competing under the team name ‘Three Tees for the Boys’, are the only all-female team taking part in the challenge at the club.
Pauline was inspired to get involved after a close friend’s husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“Thankfully, Stan acted early and the cancer was detected before it had spread,” said Pauline. “He underwent surgery and is doing well today. His experience showed us just how important awareness and early diagnosis can be,” she said.
The team’s mission is to raise money for research and support services while encouraging more men to seek medical advice if they have concerns.
According to Prostate Cancer UK, one in eight men in the UK will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime. One in three men in Scotland are diagnosed at a later stage when treatment options can be more limited.
Pauline said: “We’re playing for the partners, husbands, fathers, brothers, sons and friends we love. If our challenge encourages even one man to speak to their GP or ask for a PSA [prostate-specific antigen] test, then every step and every hole we play will have been worthwhile.”
