More than 1,500 holidaymakers and residents have been evacuated from homes and tourist resorts in southern Crete due to the spread of wildfires, according to local reports.
One of the worst areas affected is the coastal resort of Lerapetra, where Jet2holidays expanded its programme this summer.
The operator has six properties in the resort, but it hasn’t confirmed if any have been affected by the fires.
TUI also has one property, the adult-only NUMO, in Lerapetra, which is best known for Palm Vai beach (pictured) where the Bounty advert was filmed. Jet2holidays also features the NUMO, a Curio Collection by Hilton property.
Travel Gossip has asked both operators for an update.
Meanwhile, Vertical Travel Group agent Sarah Pratt of Sarah’s Instant Holidays, who is based in Crete, said fire-fighting helicopters have been continually flying over her house since last night.
“It doesn’t sound like it’s over yet as we have strong winds, but it is a two-hour drive from the coastal areas of Heraklion, Hersonissos, Malia and Stalis, so (these) are safe,” added Sarah, who lives in Malia.
